Yo, Kevin Williamson! Yeah, you! Remember two years ago, when you wrote, and I quote “New York is sinking back into pre-Giuliani chaos”? Do you?
And do you remember when I wrote, one year ago (not too politely, I admit) the following:
“Uh, Kevin, you lying sack of shit, crime in the Big Apple declined slightly in 2015, and assaults on police officers declined sharply. And, as for that “pre-Giuliani chaos,” crime rates reached their recent peak in the late nineteen eighties and began to decline in 1990, when the now endlessly reviled David Dinkins took office, continuing their decline throughout his term.”
Well, another year has come and gone, and guess what? Let the New York Times tell it:
“It would have seemed unbelievable in 1990, when there were 2,245 killings in New York City, but as of Wednesday there have been just 286 in the city this year — the lowest since reliable records have been kept.
“In fact, crime has fallen in New York City in each of the major felony categories — murder and manslaughter, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, and car thefts — to a total of 94,806 as of Sunday, well below the previous record low of 101,716 set last year.”
Yes, Bill de Blasio, the liberal the National Review loves to hate, is a more stalwart crime fighter than Rudy “Three Wives” Giuliani. And that without even Michael Bloomberg’s beloved “Stop and Frisk” (anyone who doesn’t look like Heather Mac Donald)!
