National Review “Roving Correspondent” Kevin D. Williamson has a column up at NR entitled “Chicago and Rahm Emanuel: Partners in Corruption” in which he opines “Mayor Emanuel is in a tough spot just now: A Chicago police officer was involved in a controversial shooting, and the mayor appears to have been involved in a cover-up, delaying the release of a video of the incident and a $5 million pay-off to the family of the deceased until after his reelection, which was a historically close one.” Williamson uses the furor over this “controversial shooting” as a springboard to denounce the massive, massively overpaid, and massively underproductive bureaucracies that burden most if not all of our major cities, noting quite correctly that these cities are run by Democratic politicians;
Well, that’s all well and good, or at least accurate, but what about that “controversial shooting,” Kevie D? You know, the one where a 17-year-old black kid, who actually has a name—Laquan McDonald—was shot down in cold blood in a hail of bullets by a white police officer, where the Chicago police department concealed massive evidence of Officer Jason Van Dyke’s guilt and released false statements claiming his innocence, where, well, a recent editorial in the New York Times covers some of the most shameful facts associated with the case, which is, most shamefully, almost par for the course with the Chicago Police Department.
So, yes, Kevin D. Williamson, the city government in Chicago is corrupt, though I would not go on to say, as you do, that the citizens of that city “deserve” that corruption. But I have another question for you: Do Black Lives Matter?
