I can totally understand someone refusing to vote for Obama no matter what. Every day a new civil liberties outrage, every day a new nation to bomb. But the thought of a Romney win is still massively repugnant to me. There is no reason to believe that Romney would move to the center if elected. Those who argue that he would are just saying that it would be nice if he would. A Romney victory would reward the Republican Party for its atrocious policy of political obstruction and destruction over the past four years. In my memory, no party has ever acted so unscrupulously, no party has so consciously sought political disruption for its own sake, as an end in itself, as the Republican Party has done.
The myth is that Romney, like a good fairy, will, upon election, produce a magic wand that will convert these hooligans into benign worker bees. But I doubt that McConnell, Cantor, et al. will abandon the joys of destruction so easily. They are not interested in the joys of discipline and self-sacrifice. Like Rumsfeld, Cheney, et al., they hunger for untrammeled, arbitrary power, and the way to obtain that is through war. They don’t want to pay down the national debt, they want to expand it, and the only way to do that is through war. You can’t win a war by pinching pennies, can you? Stop worrying about the budget, you traitor!
