Appelbaum’s rhapsody to the idea of giving the Pentagon lots and lots of money and letting them do whatever they damn please has come in from some pretty sharp criticism on the Internet, from wiseguys like Bob Wright, Matt Yglesias, and Cliff Bob, but what, to me, is the funniest part of Binyamin’s near Jeremiad is that idea that we can’t cut Defense spending because of the impact on Northern Virginia’s well-heeled and heavily Pentagon-dependent suburbs.
“Military spending has transformed the faded farmlands of northern Virginia into a land of glass-block office parks, oversize homes and sleek cars. Average household incomes there are among the highest in the United States.”
As an old Falls Church boy, I’m touched to learn that the Gray Lady could give a damn about folks who don’t know from Gristedes and couldn’t tell Battery Park from Grant’s Tomb, but even if everyone in old FC has to switch from Mumm’s Cordon Rouge to two-buck chuck, I’ll welcome a cut in defense spending, the bigger the better. Deal, Binyamin?
