You may have read about Donald Trump’s utterly disgusting speech to an assembly of police officers in Long Island during which he enouraged the assembled cops to “rough up” suspects and assured the boys in blue that although current laws “totally protect the criminal, not the officers, we’re changing those laws.”
Well, I didn’t read about it, but I heard about it at a rather unlikely place, the men’s locker room at the YMCA at 14th and W, NW. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the men’s locker room flat screen is dedicated to, you know, sports, but on Friday, for whatever reason, we were getting “news”. And this is what I heard (more or less):
Female anchor: “What was going on out there, Bob?
"Bob”: “I think the president was enjoying himself, Linda. He was enjoying himself, and he was feeding off the crowd.”
“Linda”: “It was an enthusiastic crowd?”
“Bob”: “Absolutely, Linda. Very enthusiastic. And, clearly, the president was enjoying himself.”
“Linda”: “And do all the laws totally protect the criminals?”
“Bob”: (laughing) “Well, that’s hard to say. I’m not sure I would go that far, but clearly, the president was enjoying himself.”
Uh, is it rude to point out that the president of the United States is not a trained bear, or a panda, or an Irish setter, or a seal pup? That he’s supposed to, you know, enforce the laws, not encourage their violation? That if he makes cruel, vicious, ignorant, false remarks, it doesn’t matter if he’s “enjoying himself”?
I don’t know what station I was hearing, though “Fox” would certainly be a good guess,1 but it’s “amusing” to think of the endless whining we have heard, and will continue to hear, from the “right” about media bias. Try looking in the goddamn mirror, motherfuckers.
Afterwords
Fortunately, the Suffolk County Police Department, whose officers Trump addressed, rudely rejected Trump’s neo-fascist bullshit2 in no uncertain terms.
