Yes, Charles Krauthammer, whom I’ve often harangued and harassed, “sometimes … displays a sense of honor” (to quote myself), and one of those times is right now, as he weighs on Trump v. Comey with a well-titled commentary, “A political ax murder”. True, Charlie clings to the now-standard right-wing meme that FBI Director James Comer was a total incompetent, because he was so mean to Hillary Clinton, a fact that had gone hitherto unnoticed on the right until last week, but, thanks in large part to Donald Trump’s blatant confession that the original explanation for Comey’s dismissal was, you know, a deliberate lie, and that the real reason was, not to put too fine a point on it, obstruction of justice, Charlie comes through like a champ, describing Comey’s departure as, yes, “a political ax murder.” Or, to let Charlie do a little more of the talking “So why did he do it? Now we know: The king asked whether no one would rid him of this troublesome priest, and got so impatient he did it himself.”
Afterwords
So far as I know, Charlie is the first right-wing big gun to land on Trump with both feet. It’s true that Krauthammer is far from a true believer when it comes to Trump, but he is still a Fox News talking head and the National Review features his every word with reverence. The old, battered Acela Republican elite, most of them, were trying to come to terms with Trump—“Don’t worry! That’s just Donald being Donald! Do you want Caitlyn Jenner on the Supreme Court?” But apparently not everybody likes being a whore. Know hope? Well, I wouldn’t go that far.
