Okay, I’m tired of being serious. Besides, this is huge. You may remember a week or two ago I went off on a tangent about comics (here and here). Well, I thought I had kicked the habit, but I gotta tell you, the old “Woodcut Gil” Gil Thorp artist is back. Tales From The Bucket (the world’s least appetizingly named ice cream parlor) includes 332 pages of the late Jack Berrill’s inimitable etchings, depicting, among other things, “star running back Don Adams’ romantic conundrum; hoops star Ray “The Magician” Merlin’s family dilemma; hoops guard Jeff Owens fight for his reputation; Gil’s bungled marriage proposal to actress Holly Dobbs; pint-sized point guard Willie Knox’s bewitched basketball season; diamond man Greg Nessen’s struggle to escape his older brother’s shadow; highly recruited gridder Lonnie Baylor’s difficult college decision; left fielder Scott Bryant’s dangerous reunion; Abby Andrews’ struggle to deal with her parents crumbling relationship; wide receiver Keith Bell’s brush with the dark side and Orin Lake’s attempt to repair his bad reputation.” Albrecht Dürer, move over!
I can tell you right now that I’m not going to buy this book, no, not even though it also contains Berrill’s “teen advice” strip that ran from 1966–76, which I’m guessing would be even more unendurable than Gil himself.
