Over at Slate, William Saleton catches Texas wild man Gov. Rick Perry in a massive contradiction over his continuing condemnation of the President’s ObamaCare and Rick’s 2007 executive order mandating inoculations of teenage girls against the HPV virus, which can cause cervical cancer. The pro-life (or anti-sex) crowd was particularly irked by this because they wanted to tell teenage girls that sex causes cancer, and Rick was taking that argument away from them. Rick’s argument—about which he can become rather testy at times—is that a chief executive has the right to do by fiat anything that will save money and lives. Unless his name is Barack Obama.
Afterwords
Saleton’s piece should definitely be read in full, not only for his own dissection of the governor’s hypocrisy, but for the helpful links. Will Mitt Romney be able to exploit this issue effectively, or will Rick’s “Hang ‘em High” persona convince the pro-life crowd that he’s their kind of guy? I wish I didn’t know the answer to that one.
