Today’s Politico has a piece by Rachel Bade and John Breshnahan, Ryan on the hot seat to deliver for Trump that features a “hot” quote from one “congressional source” regarding House Speaker Paul Ryan:
“Everyone has always said he’s this policy genius, who is the future of the party when it’s, ‘Actually, you gave us a half-baked bill [on health care “reform”] that the Senate hates, conservatives hate and moderates hate,’” the source continued. “We think that’s probably going to be his hardest thing to come back from; we lost faith in him as a policy maker.”
“A half-baked bill that the Senate hates, conservatives hate and moderates hate”? Dude, that’s cold! (And hot!) But not entirely accurate. “17% baked” is more like it, because that’s how many Americans approved of Paulie’s bag o’ legislative disjecta membra1 that, unlike Frankenstein’s monster, could never have walked a step. Of course, all the cool kids, like Jon Chait, Paul Krugman, and yours truly have been saying that for years, but, hey, it’s better to be a slow learner than a no learner.
- Latin for “scattered fragments” [of poetry] or (more on point) “hacked and torn body parts”. And totally no disrespect—totally, dude, totally—to the totally awesome New Zealand goth band of the same name. ↩︎
