Steve Chapman is confused. God-fearing Republicans used to hate communism. Now they love it! What’s the deal?
The deal is, Donald told them so. “For communist dictators such as Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un, Trump exudes admiration and amity. To the anti-Western Russian President Vladimir Putin, he offered congratulations for winning a rigged election.”
El Donaldo has made exactly zero secret of the fact that the one club he wants to belong to is the Presidents for Life Club. Those guys are so cool!
Republicans still fear God, Steve. It’s just that now they worship Trump instead of Jesus.
Afterwords
The one upside is that Trump, to make himself look good, now claims that we’re in no danger of nuclear war with North Korea, which is true, but (of course) we never were, because North Korea would never have a reason to attack us, unless we attacked them first. With its nuclear weapons, North Korea can, and will, play the threat game, but so did (and so does) Russia (both Soviet and non-Soviet varieties) and so did Communist China, and yet we survived, because every nation can recognize that the downside of nuclear war is worse than any upside.
Back in the day, President Obama stood by helplessly/pathetically as his appointees at the Department of Defense and the CIA endlessly warned the infinite danger of a nuclear North Korea, simply to justify their own existence. But now Trump doesn’t need to do that. Republicans will vote for ever increasing defense spending not to protect America but to glorify Trump and magnify his name.
Afterwords II
If you go back and read my previous rants, you’ll find that I was/am far more skeptical of North Korean technical prowess than “received opinion”. Well, there’s no question that North Korea now has fully functional atomic bombs and missiles that will travel a long distance, but whether they have a fully functional ICBM is another matter. It’s “arguable” that they don’t, but right now the guys and gals at the Pentagon and Langley don’t care if they do or they don’t. As long as Trump is in office, the military-industrial complex doesn’t require a bogy to justify bigger and better budgets. Trump’s ego is all the justification required.
