Over at Politico, Michael Kruse has a story up regarding the Jeb/Marco friendship/betrayal kerfuffle that includes a hoary/whorey chestnut attributed to Ronald Reagan, to wit: “There’s no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” Of course, what Ronnie meant was “there’s no limit to what a man can do or where he can go as long as I get the credit.”
This brings to mind another hoary/whorey one attributed to Ronnie, “Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.” Ronnie didn’t come up with this one, but he used it often enough when he was governor of California. Later, of course, he ran against sitting Republican President Gerald Ford, splitting the party, and then sat on his hands during the general election, because he wanted Ford to lose. A full term for Ford would have meant twelve years of Republican rule, virtually guaranteeing a Democrat in 1980 and definitely guaranteeing no presidency for Ronald Reagan. Here’s the quotation that should be associated with Ronald Reagan: “Nice guys finish last.”
