Reading conservative websites can be depressing, according to a recent study by Alan Vanneman, who visited two of them, the National Review and the Weekly Standard.
“The sites are depressing because conservatives are depressed,” claimed Vanneman. “There’s this Trump thing, which isn’t going away, and the fact that the Republican base hates foreigners, hates free trade, and wants to see increases for Social Security and Medicare. The base also isn’t really excited about tax cuts for billionaires, and no one can figure out why.
“Jeb Bush is clearly a massive disappointment to the conservative sites. He was supposed to be the Man. How can he be the Man when he begins every other sentence with “What I meant was …”? Bill Kristol is so upset that he wants more Republicans to run for president. I mean, who’s left, Dan Quayle?
“Another thing that’s depressing conservatives is that the president’s Iran deal is starting to look like a done deal, something no one could have predicted two years ago. An entire political party that isn’t afraid of AIPAC? That’s epic, but not in a good way.
“That’s too much bad news already, but on top of that we have China’s semi-meltdown, which is going to screw up not only their economy but Russia’s as well, and even weaken the oil states in the Middle East. So now there’s no one to be afraid of. It’s no wonder the right-wing folks are writing like they had Bloody Marys for breakfast and Stingers for lunch. It is a wonder that they still can find the keys.”
