Well, it is. Yes, only 5 of 50 Republican senators voted to proceed with Donald Trump’s second impeachment. On the other hand, on the occasion of his first impeachment, only 2 of 53 Republicans voted even to hear witnesses. 90% versus 96.2%? That’s progress, baby! I’m impressed!
I confess that I saw this coming. It was not unknown, back in the day, for Republicans, even Republican senators, to criticize the Donald. But to vote against him—well, that’s taking it to a whole ’nother level, a level for which 90% of Republicans just ain’t got the guts.
Afterwords
Technically, the treacherous five—Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Mitt Romney (UT), Ben Sasse (NE) and Patrick J. Toomey (PA)—voted that it was constitutional to impeach (and convict) a president who was no longer in office. During Trump’s first impeachment, only Collins and Romney voted to hear witnesses, and only Romney voted to convict.
