It gets worse: Despite all his bravado—and, surely, despite all his anger at being outspent by a margin of more than five to one—Newt will probably give up the ghost pretty quickly, throwing in the towel and letting the Mittman win in a walk, instead of waging a months’ long guerilla war of fraternal squabbling, name-calling, and back-stabbing that unhappy liberals like me would lap up like kittens in cream. Newt will go on, I suspect, if the margin is less than 10 points, and it’s starting to look more like 20.
What’s more, the process is likely to make Mitt look like a winner, which is something he’s never resembled before. When the going got tough, Mitt got going. A big win will give him the bad-boy swagger that Republicans love. The Mitt haters, like Bill Kristol, will get on board, because they’ve got no choice. Can’t tell the difference between Obamacare and Romneycare? Who cares? You can tell the difference between winning and losing, can’t you?
Obama better hope the economy gets warm and stays there. Because otherwise he’s got no chance.
