Left-wing blogs have been pointing to a 2008 AP story to show that Gingrich was in fact hired, along with a lot of other prominent Republican log-rollers, to protect Freddie’s flank from the right wing. “Gingrich talked and wrote about what he saw as the benefits of the Freddie Mac business model,” the AP wrote.
But Jennifer doesn’t stop there. She digs out a speech that Gingrich gave in 1995 pumping for Freddie, which strikes even a confirmed Newt hater like myself as ancient history. So why is Jennie treating poor Newt so mean?
I’m guessing that Jennie and her boss, ravin’ Israeli maven Fred Hewitt, have decided they’ve got to go with Mitt. He’s no Dubya, no Dick Cheney, and that’s for sure. He might even be against torture, or at least not in favor of it, or at least not really crazy about it, which is a sad thing to say about a Republican, but facts are facts: Mitt can win. He has a chance, a decent chance, particularly if he doesn’t have to endure a long, bloody primary season, which would force Mitt to say, and repeat, and repeat, all sorts of serious, right-wing bullshit to appease the mob, said serious, right-wing bullshit all too likely to be slung back at Mitt in the general. To prevent that from happening, the dudes in Mitt’s way have to be cut down.
I say that because Jennifer hasn’t just been hittin’ on Newt. She’s also been pumping buckshot into the onery, no-good hides of the likes of Rick Perry and even Herman Cain. Sentimental right-wing babes like Ann Coulter may stand by their man when he’s being torpedoed by the lamestrean media, Jennie ain’t so weepy. For her it’s all about Israel, 24/7. Zion ain’t everything. It’s the only thing.
Afterwords
It’s only fair to point out that not all the neos are ridin’ on the Rubicon train. Bill Kristol, the neocon’s neocon, virtual founder of the Anyone But Mitt Club, is still a member, and apparently is thinking that maybe Newt is the guy, which is a sign of real desperation. Since Mitt has stocked his shadow cabinet of advisors with not only right-wing neocons, but wild-eyed right-wing neocons,† he must be wondering “how many times do I have to blow these guys?” Welcome to DC, Mitt. Welcome to DC.
*Likudist Rachel Abrams recently celebrated the release of Gilad Shait with the following blog post: “Then round up his captors, the slaughtering, death-worshiping, innocent-butchering, child-sacrificing savages who dip their hands in blood and use women—those who aren’t strapping bombs to their own devils’ spawn and sending them out to meet their seventy-two virgins by taking the lives of the school-bus-riding, heart-drawing, Transformer-doodling, homework-losing children of Others—and their offspring—those who haven’t already been pimped out by their mothers to the murder god—as shields, hiding behind their burkas and cradles like the unmanned animals they are, and throw them not into your prisons, where they can bide until they’re traded by the thousands for another child of Israel, but into the sea, to float there, food for sharks, stargazers, and whatever other oceanic carnivores God has put there for the purpose.” Jennie praised this blood-thirsty tirade as “chilling, sobering, eloquent,” which Wash Post ombudsman Patrick Paxton found just a bit over the top, enraging Fred, who apparently feels it’s not Paxton’s job to criticize Post employees. Fred aggressively defended Jennie for being “an excellent journalist and a relentless reporter.” Well, if you just changed that to “an unscrupulous journalist and a relentless mouthpiece for the Likudist right wing,” you’d be accurate. †Daniel Larison digs into the record of Walid Phares, apparently the wildest pair of eyes on Romney’s payroll. Yet, strangely, somehow, some conservatives still find it difficult to trust the guy.
