Sure it’s tough. Those old knees don’t bend easily. But when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Over at the National Review, old Michael Brendan Dougherty is gently but persistently massaging those knobby and obdurate joints in preparation for November 2024 in a pithy piece entitled Not Trump Again / Only Trump, describing an inner debate he has with himself (so he says) contending, first, that Donald Trump is unacceptable as president because, because, well, because he isn’t Trump enough! He talks the talk, sure, against the Woke, but he doesn’t walk the walk! We need a man who can follow through, who can seal the deal, who can knock those woke faggots on their goddamn faggot asses. For keeps! Says Mike
We need someone like Ron DeSantis, who can serve two terms. At least that much is required to even begin draining the swamp. We also need someone with DeSantis’s follow-through, his willingness to stick with a fight until it’s really finished. We can’t afford Trump’s lack of attention to detail.
But maybe, maybe, says Mike, the only way to really stick to the damn woke folks, the only way to show them really who’s boss, is to elect—well, re-elect—the man they really hate, El Donaldo Himself. Put that in your crack pipe and smoke it, you damn hippies!
Only Trump can confront this establishment [of woke fairies] in the way it deserves to be confronted, because only Trump has his footing in other sources of power and charisma such as his wealth, business, and — most important — celebrity.
They’re going after Trump with everything because they sense the danger for them. And they sense that they can tame the rest of the Republicans whenever they want to do so.
We have to bring this story to a final confrontation: 2024 is about whether the 2016 election was legitimate and whether we ever get to have another one like it again.
Gee, it seems like it was only two weeks ago that Mike was writing stuff like “If you really want to beat Trump, you have to go with the guy who has broadest appeal across the party. Right now that’s Ron DeSantis.” Because it was!
Immediately after Jan. 6, some National Review folks wrote with honest revulsion at Trump’s attempted coup. Since then, however, they’ve been backtracking, or at least sideways tracking, saying, not that Trump shouldn’t win in the Republican nomination in 2024 because he’s, you know, bad, but because he either couldn’t win the general or, even if he could win the general, couldn’t win “the war”, the war against Woke. But now it’s clear that Trump is going to win the nomination, so the NR folk have to either 1) suck it up and admit that those goddamn Never Trumpers were right from the get go—that Trump is morally unfit for the presidency—or 2) admit that, instead, that they’re, well, total whores. And it’s pretty clear that Mike’s on his knees already, and headed for all fours.
Afterwords
It’s, uh, “amusing”, that Mike now thinks that the only way to guarantee our system of free elections in this country is to elect as President the one man in American history ever to try to overthrow our system of free elections in this country and whose minions are now plotting to put millions of undocumented aliens in “deportation camps”. Well, that’s Republicans for you; always one step ahead of the rest of us.
