Another obscure Monk tune, which can sound a lot like “Flat Foot Floogie” if the musicians aren’t careful. When Monk first signed with Riverside Records, producer Orrin Keepnews had the great idea, which probably was a pretty good idea, to start off by featuring Monk playing tunes that people knew—an album of Ellington tunes and another of “standards.” Monk naturally resented this, as he managed to resent many things, and slipped off to record four originals as a sideman with Gigi Gryce for another label. Since Keepnews obviously wasn’t interested in world premieres of great music, Monk could find someone who was. Anyway, the Lexington kids seem to be the only ones with the balls to put “Stuffy Turkey” up on Youtube, and more power to them. Posted by Rob Plosker
