A very long clip, with excellent sound, though with interviews as well, which are (usually) interesting, but not as interesting as the music. Trumpeter Jimmy Owens leads a group with Kenny Barron (piano), Winard Harper (drums), Howard Jones (tuba and baritone saxophone), Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Marcus Strickland (tenor saxophone), and Kenny Davis on bass. I’ve been listening to the CD. As is often the case, the solos aren’t always as Monkish as they could (should) be. Owens, though a generation younger than Monk, sounds like a swing trumpeter rather than a post-bopper. The set starts off with Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing” rather than Monk. On “Bright Mississippi,” Monk’s reworking of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” the band prefers “Georgia” to Monk. Still, it’s good to hear that tuba. Posted by “the pacereport1972”
