Damn straight we do! Well, some of us, anyway, and some of us, like me, are very, very unimportant!
I say this, of course, because there has been considerable blowback to the now notorious letter published in Harper’s magazine, signed by a large number of cultural icons and/or irritants, to the irritation of many who weren’t considered cool enough to be asked to sign, or who resented being told not to silence people they didn’t like, particularly when being told not to do so by people they wished to, well, silence. The WashPost’s Allyson Chiu gives us a rundown on the “controversy” here.
The letter itself is largely ponderous boilerplate that I agree with 100%, or at least close enough. As Chiu tells us, at least two of the signers have bailed when they realized that signing the damn thing positioned them as “the Establishment”. Well, good riddance to wienies, I say.
