Last week I posted a video of Spanish pianist Ricardo Descalzo playing “Eine Kleine Mitternacht Musik”, a nine-part suite/“rumination” by George Crumb on Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”, one of 21 “variations” commissioned by Italian pianist Emanuele Arciuli. There are videos of Arciuli himself playing Crumb’s suite, but the sound wasn’t very good and I couldn’t get the links to work, so I thought I’d post Descalzo’s version and post a vidio of Arciuli playing one of the other variations later.
Well, I still can’t get the links to work and I can’t find a video of Arciuli playing another variation, so I’m posting one of him playing Elliott Carter’s 1980 compostion “Night Fantasies”. Arciuli has recorded an album of all the variations except Crumb’s, which you can find here, with all of the composers identified.
