“You guys!” Murray is saying. “You’re so not Black! You should join the not Black Party, like me!”
Obviously, that hasn’t been happening. Murray thinks he knows why: “Republicans are seen by Asians—as they are by Latinos, blacks, and some large proportion of whites—as the party of Bible-thumping, anti-gay, anti-abortion creationists. Factually, that’s ludicrously inaccurate. In the public mind, except among Republicans, that image is taken for reality.”
In other words, Asians think a not Bible-thumping, not anti-gay, not anti-abortion, not creationist party is a Bible-thumping, anti-gay, anti-abortion creationist party. They must be stupid. It’s probably genetic.
Afterwords
Since Republicans wrap themselves around the cross, since they are anti-gay, since they are anti-abortion, since they are very reluctant to acknowledge that the earth is, you know, old, it’s not surprising that Asians, and lots of other people, have these “misconceptions.” But the cream of Murray’s hypocrisy is that he omits the “misconception” that hurts the Republican Party the most: that it’s stridently anti-immigrant, and aggressively “White.”
Thanx to Dave Weigel on this one, who’s a lot more willing to read AEI “ideas” than I am.
