Every four years we are told that the coming election is the most important of one’s life. This time it might actually be true. At stake is the relation between citizen and state, the very nature of the American social contract.
But what about the things that Mr. Krauthammer holds dear? Perhaps, after the past twenty years, Mr. Krauthammer has convinced himself that he “hates” socialized medicine, and socialized this, that, and the other, but I don’t think he really does. There is one thing, and one thing only, that Mr. Krauthammer holds dear, and that is Israel. Israel is the sun about which his soul finds its orbit. I suspect that Mr. Krauthammer would happily turn “the very nature of the American social contract” inside out and upside down in return for a few bombing raids on Iran’s nuclear facilities. It would be refreshing to hear him say what he really thinks, instead of saying what he thinks will manipulate his readers into doing what he wants them to do.
