“We should also work through the appropriate channels to create permanent solutions for our immigration system, to secure our borders, modernize legal immigration, and strengthen our economy. In the past, the president has expressed support for ideas like these. Now we ask him to cooperate with us to get it done.”
Good to hear, right? I mean, if you look forward to some meaningful, long-lasting, bipartisan solution to our country’s schizophrenic, “let ‘em in but pretend we didn’t/take their money but don’t let ‘em vote” approach to immigration, it was nice to hear Florida Republican freshman congressman Carlos Curbelo say those words in the Republican Party’s official response to President Obama’s State of the Union address. The problem is, Carlos was supposed to be delivering the Spanish translation of the official official Republican response (aka the “white” response)1 delivered by that hog-cuttin’ gal from out Iowa way, Sen. Joni Ernst, and Joni, well she didn’t say nothin’ about no immigration. Which all led to some fancy steppin’ by Reince “I’m not the policy guy” Priebus, who is nonetheless chair of the Republican National Committee, as Politico reports. But, hey, if enough Republicans start talking the talk, maybe a few of them will even start walking the walk. So stay tuned!
- The GOP dropped this language from its press release when it was pointed out to them that it looked terrible. So they can learn! Just like rats and, you know, amœbae! ↩︎
