Hey, kids! (I use the term advisedly.) Remember that movie,The Devil Wears Prada, based on flesh-eating Vogue editor Anna Wintour, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, that came out about ten years back?1 Well, according to the New York Times, it’s going to be made into a Broadway musical! Really! With Elton John (helpfully identified by the Times as a “pop star”, which is reasonably accurate) doing the score!
You can read all about it in the Times. Well, almost all about it, except for the part about the original novel,2 movie, and musical all being based on the personage of Anna Wintour. Because even the New York Times doesn’t know everything!
Afterwords
The Times’ review of the film similarly feigned ignorance of Anna’s role in the novel’s gestation, allowing the book to be a “roman à clef” while neglecting to supply the clef. How many people has the Times been afraid of for ten years?
- I reviewed it, wittily, as The Devil Wears Product ↩︎
- The original book, by Lauren Weisberger, was a novel about “Miranda Priestly”, tyrannical editor of “Runway”, but since Lauren had been Anna’s assistant at Vogue, a lot of people, like me, got confused. An honest mistake! ↩︎
