As Reason’s Matt Welch discusses, in acidulous detail, El Davo has been writing this same column since, well, since Hector was a pup. And he’s still selling it! Sweet gig!
Meanwhile, Michael “King” Bloomberg, after spending twelve years struggling to turn the Big Apple into Singapore West, now has brought his “exploding footprint” to DC, according to Politico. Not all of Big Mike’s ideas have been bad,† but a lot of them have, and the thought of him drenching little ole’ DC in perhaps a billion dollars in Bloomberg ego juice, well, it certainly won’t hurt the housing market. And there’s nothing DC needs more than more lobbyists, think tanks, position papers, and PowerPoints. You just can’t have enough!
*A Taylors Fladgate ’60 perhaps, or the ’08, if you’re feeling generous.
†Some of Mike’s best ideas never reached fruition. For example, he noticed that, thanks to the decline in smoking, prevalence of smoke detectors and sprinklers, etc., the number of fires in NYC had declined by about 40 percent over the decades. So, maybe, we don’t need so many firefighters? You can guess how that went over, but Mike was right, and Obama was (and is) wrong. These days, firefighters are largely overpaid ambulance drivers and paramedics. Easily his worst was his decision to seek a third term, leading him to stomp all over, you know, democracy, plus saddling New York with a multi-billion dollar payoff to the city’s teachers’ union, the bill for which the city will be paying, well, forever.
