Surely there’s a “moderate” rebel group we can send arms to, isn’t there? Perhaps we can declare a “no fly zone” of some sort, which we can use as an excuse for further involvement, the way we did in Libya, which, if we’re really lucky, could lead to some boots on the ground thing. Any thoughts, Samantha?
Afterwords
I’ve been whacking away at UN Ambassador Samantha Power, whose glib hypocrisy in the service of humanitarian interventionism is well on display in this piece in the New Yorker by Evan Osnos, even though my efforts probably amount to little more than shutting the barn door after the mare’s escape. I suspect/hope that what damage Samantha can do in office she has already done, but unfortunately her kind of “we can always find some justification for intervention if we try” thinking remains far too prevalent all along the Acela corridor.
Update
“Far too prevalent” indeed. The White House has just announced that the president will be signing the new “get tough with Russia” bill, which is entirely unnecessary and has the potential for being deeply disruptive. Okay, Samantha, you win.
