Back in 1998 Republicans went through three Speakers of the House of Representatives before they finally impeached President Bill Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice:
- The president provided perjurious, false and misleading testimony to the grand jury regarding the Paula Jones case and his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
- The president obstructed justice in an effort to delay, impede, cover up and conceal the existence of evidence related to the Jones case.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who resigned prior to the impeachment proceedings, was conducting an adulterous affair, cheating on his second wife with the woman who would become his third wife. House Speaker-elect Robert Livingston resigned before taking office because of a story broken by that pillar of journalistic integrity Hustler magazine. And now we know that Dennis Haskert, the speaker who presided over the actual impeachment, was willing to pay $3.5 million in hush money to conceal his own adulterous homosexual conduct, which probably involved the corruption of a minor and a violation of his responsibilities as a high-school teacher.
Are Republicans going to say “I’m sorry”? I’m waiting.
