A week or too ago I took an entirely justified crack at poor old Jonah Goldberg, deservedly lumping him together with the likes of Ross Douthat, Jack Shafer, Daniel Drezner and Ramesh Ponnuru as pussy-footing semi-Never Trumpers for acknowledging that the Big Guy himself was entirely unacceptable while denying that he constituted a real threat to American democracy, as well as refusing to separate themselves from his Republican defenders/sycophants/cock suckers, desperately trying to pretend that one can make a meaningful distinction between Trumpism and the Republican Party—the “This too shall pass” crowd, I would have said, if I had thought of it at the time, singling Jonah out for his scornful post Grow Up, Everybody, which furiously ridiculed the notion that a “true conservative” should support those pot-smoking hippies on the Left, aka the Democratic Party, as the only way to defeat Trump and Trumpism.
Well, as it turned out, Jonah was zigging right in that post, which he then followed up with a zig to the left, “A Third Party Could Cure What Ails the GOP”, which, it seems, provoked an avalanche of “Ha, ha, Jonah, what have you been smoking?” responses from his now Semper Trumping former pals like National Review guy Charles C. W. Cooke (Charles “Conventional Wisdom” Cooke?)—much to Jonah’s irritation (and my amusement). For, while Jonah struggles to be polite, and witty, and charming to his former comrades in arms, rambling on and on, as is frequently his wont, what he really wants to say is “Why are you guys behaving like total fucking assholes? Why? Why? Why?
Good question, Jonah.
