Over at the National Review, Peter Nordlinger, a conservative anti-Trumper of the highest water, has these words to say about Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), who has announced that he will not run for reelection in 2022:
Portman knows things — a lot of them. He has a strong commitment to the American system, undergirded by the Constitution. He is versatile and competent. He is interested in more than rilin’ up the folks, via Fox. When it comes to today’s GOP, he’s a fish out of water. An utter alien.
I’m sure that Sen. Portman, in his private life, is all those things and more, but let’s face it: his “strong commitment to the American system, undergirded by the Constitution,” led him to do absolutely nothing to obstruct Donald Trump, and everything to enable him, ever since Trump emerged on the political scene. There is a word for people like Rob Portman, and that word is “coward”. Like every other Republican of consequence.
