The odds for a Biden victory do not look good. Possibly the Democrats will win the Senate. Probably they gain strength in the House. Our long national nightmare just got longer.
Obviously, we cannot surrender to Trumpism. We have to endure, so that, eventually, when the emotions that brought Trump to power exhaust themselves, the forces of liberalism will be able to reassert themselves effectively.
I have no idea of how this can be done, but I know it must be done. Now is not the time for recriminations, but there will be a time for recriminations. It says a lot about the Democratic Party that the best it could do in 2016 and 2020 for presidential candidates was to nominate two aged faces from the 20th century. It is a measure of our disorder that we can be “thankful” that both Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will be too old to run in 2024. We will have to turn to new faces because the old ones will be dead.
I cannot believe that soullessness will be the norm for America in the future, but Donald Trump is soulless, and it appears he will remain in power. We cannot despair, but we cannot underestimate the gravity of this disaster.
