Over at the New Republic, David A. Bell takes an eminently justified poke at Tom Friedman and other be-moustached dudes who enjoy bemoaning the decline of America’s greatness: “Middle-Aged Columnists Think America Is In Decline. Big Surprise.”
Dave’s piece gives us a guided tour of moans and groans over the past half-century, from such certified geniuses as George Will, though he politely omits liberal fave Paul Krugman from the list, though he certainly belongs there. I like Paulie, as I’ve said before, but his growing disgust at the failure of America to heed his every word of wisdom has made him a bit surly of late.
Friedman gets so many beatdowns these days that one is tempted to feel sorry for the poor schmuck, but no, I can’t do it. He’s so damn full of it and he makes so much damn money. Hit again, Dave! Harder! Harder!
