The notion that the white working class is fucked up has been pushed earnestly by AEI-style conservatives who seem to be mostly afraid that these folks will start to realize that eliminating the capital gains and “death” taxes doesn’t seem to do anything for their bottom line and end up going back to the Democratic Party. The ineffably silly Charles Murray has tediously moralistic slant on all of this, the main point being that those damn bicoastal liberals 1) work hard and 2) get married, while simultaneously encouraging dumb poor white folks to 1) not work hard and 2) not marry.
Throughout most of human history, the point of life has been not to work, if you could possibly get away with it. So it would seem that with the massive economic growth that has occurred since WWII, even allowing for the current unpleasantness, plus the massive improvement in consumer goods, and the decline in their costs over time, more and more people are able to enjoy the greatest good of all—leisure. As for the marriage thing, I used to work with a woman who grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn back in the sixties. Every Friday night, the Italian men would go out and get drunk, and every Saturday morning the Italian women would have black eyes. If you don’t need a husband, why have one?
