Yes, in case you were worrying, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin “Nino” Scalia is still an asshole. In the Court’s recent oral argument on Arizona’s xenophobic legislation mandating police harassment of foreign-looking folks, reported by Damon Root for Reason, Nino showed himself to be heartily xenophobic, with precisely zero patience with “people who have no right to be [here].” When U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli tried to suggest that the U.S. government might have a legitimate interest in how states harass citizens of other nations, Nino snarled “We have to enforce our laws in a manner that will please Mexico? Is that what you’re saying?” We’re ammuricans, goddamnit! We don’t put up with other people! Other people put up with us!
