Good pitch, bad windup

Over at the New York Times “Opinionator,” Ezekiel J. Emanuel* makes an excellent pitch for increasing the age of eligibility for Social Security according to income. But in his setup he tells us that “When it comes to Social Security and Medicare, Republicans emphasize cuts and privatization, while Democrats strongly oppose both approaches.”

Zeke, Democrats have passed a law that made substantial cuts in Medicare. It’s called “ObamaCare,” and it’s why the Republicans, who promised not to cut a nickel in Medicare benefits, now control the House of Representatives. The Republicans’ semi-sacred Ryan plan makes no mention of any changes in Social Security, and “promises” to start privatizing Medicare ten years from now.† Zeke, if someone told you he was going to go on a diet ten years from now, would you believe him?
